We are delighted to announce we will be working with Career Ready, a UK based charity linking employers with schools, helping to prepare young people age 15/16-18 for the world of work.
Lisa Dempsey, from our contracts team has volunteered to mentor one of their S5 students. The programme is due to be launched in October and will complete in 2018. The student will also receive a 4 week paid internship at Head Resourcing, during the programme.
Lisa will have a key role to play in guiding this student, she will need to act as a sounding board for ideas/concerns about school/career choices, provide insights into possible opportunities and provide support on personal issues if appropriate. She will have a real chance to unlock the student’s potential and help them flourish as they start their journey from education to the workplace. Lisa will also have the opportunity to develop her own presenting, coaching and management skills throughout the mentoring process.
Lisa, a Senior Recruitment Consultant within our contracts team has worked at Head Resourcing for 7 years “I am extremely excited to be involved in the Career Ready programme. When I was in school there was nothing like this available. I really wish there had been someone there to help explain what options there were for my future, how important it was to choose my school subjects, and generally offer mentorship and guidance. I very much hope I can be this to the young person I’m assigned to. During the Internship, Head Resourcing will provide a friendly corporate environment, which will allow the student to work with people from all walks of life, in what is a fast paced exciting environment. This will be a fantastic opportunity to learn new life skills, which I believe are key to being prepared for moving into the workplace.”
Huw Martin, Managing Director at Head Resourcing said “We are delighted to be supporting the Career Ready programme and are hugely supportive of its aims to provide life-changing opportunities and real life work experiences. I’m confident that Lisa will be a great mentor and we as a company will support this initiative in every way we can to help maximise its impact. We believe that to be a good business you need to look after your people, treat them with respect and create a good working environment built on trust. Key values which can be instilled in others.”
Career Ready has created huge impact over the years. More than 10,000 students across the UK have benefited from the Career Ready programme since 2002. In Scotland, 97% of their students went on to a positive destination, of whom 25% went into work or work-based training, 54% are at university and 21% are in further education.
Rhonda Perry, Career Ready Regional Manager for Edinburgh, Midlothian and Fife, said: “We are incredibly grateful for this new support from Head Resourcing. Our programme continues to grow in numbers and impact each year and we are now working with more than 100 schools across Scotland. None of what we do would be possible without our huge range of employer supporters, who dedicate their time, energy and resources to helping local young people to gain the skills and experience they need to fulfil their potential. It is fantastic to welcome new employers in Edinburgh into our network.
In return, I hope Lisa will find the experience extremely rewarding. Our mentors often tell us that seeing a young person flourish throughout their journey and knowing that you have supported their transformation is one of the proudest achievements you can have.”
