Lead DevOps Engineer (Hybrid 2 days per week in London)
Head Resourcing is pleased to be partnering with one of the UK's leading retail banks, seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer to join their dynamic team in London. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to large-scale, distributed systems with a focus on Kubernetes, as well as Azure and GCP cloud platforms.
In this hybrid role, you will take on leadership responsibilities, coaching and mentoring peers while remaining hands-on to tackle complex technical challenges. Your focus will be on ensuring high system reliability, optimizing services, and driving automation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of engineers, guiding and mentoring them, while setting an example through hands-on contributions in DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE).
- Collaborate on building resilient, distributed systems on public cloud infrastructure with a strong emphasis on Azure, and extending to GCP.
- Drive architectural simplicity and operational excellence by minimizing manual interventions through automation and scaling cloud services.
- Work on optimising and migrating existing systems to Azure, utilizing Azure PaaS and IaaS, with a future focus on GCP integration.
- Apply deep Kubernetes expertise to troubleshoot and enhance services within the K8s ecosystem, including experience with Istio and service mesh technologies like Envoy.
Areas of Focus:
- Kubernetes: Extensive experience in managing and troubleshooting Kubernetes environments, with a focus on Istio service mesh and Envoy.
- Helm: Authoring and maintaining Helm charts, leveraging Helmfile to manage deployments.
- SRE Mindset: Strong familiarity with SRE practices, including defining and managing Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Automation & DevOps Tooling: Expertise with CI/CD tools, including Azure DevOps, Terraform, and ARM Templates, and solid experience in automating deployment processes.
- Container Management: Proficient in Docker, with a focus on security scanning using tools like Aquasec.
- Cloud Platforms: Strong knowledge of Azure and experience with cloud-native services, with an eventual goal to extend expertise to GCP.
- Resiliency & Disaster Recovery: Experience in Chaos Engineering, implementing resiliency strategies, and leading disaster recovery planning.
- Networking & Security: Hands-on experience managing network layers (L3-L7), DNS, and public key infrastructure (PKI).
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- A seasoned professional with a strong background in SRE or DevOps, able to provide in-depth mentorship and technical leadership.
- Extensive experience with Kubernetes, ideally within Azure AKS environments, with familiarity in Istio.
- Proficiency in at least two programming or scripting languages such as Python, Java, Bash, Go, or PowerShell.
- Strong expertise in DevOps tools like Azure DevOps, GitHub, SonarQube, Nexus, and Git.
- Experience in technical architecture, microservices, and designing code-based CI/CD pipelines.

- Up to £118k depending on experience
